Rattastrophe.
That is the word I have created in order to describe what has happened to our new little Webb family. Upon the receipt of our seventh rat, I have decided that this is a "rattastrophe" because I think that seven rats makes us officially crazed fanatics. Seven is just too many. Seven is reality television "Look at those crazy rat people and I'm so glad they aired this show so that my quirks seem normal" level of weird. This has to stop.
Why do we have seven rats, you may ask? Well, I will tell you. We have seven rats because I have this weird place in my heart for the furry creatures, and I can't say no to them. Either fortunately or unfortunately, Rex seems to have this same place in his heart as well. That is how we ended up adopting Juno, a "teen mom" rat from KAMSC who was really too young to have babies but got pregnant anyway. She had a litter of three rats, and because baby rats at KAMSC are killed within days (due to overcrowding, starvation and, unfortunately, being mistaken for food by other rats) we decided we had to adopt them. So Juno and her three babies came to live with us, and we became foster parents.
So we have Cindy, Houdini, Juno, and her babies Snap, Crackle, and Pop. That's six. Rat number seven came when Rex's brother Jake called me and said that Joey (Rex's cousin) was trying to feed rats to his snake. The snake ate all of the rats except for one, and that baby rat was terrified for obvious reasons. Joey held it up with pliers by the tail in order to try to get the snake to eat it, but the snake wasn't interested. Joey threw the baby rat in a box with nothing but water and lettuce, and Jake recognized this injustice and called Rex and I to rescue it. I mean, come on - did we really have a choice?? So we added rat number seven to our clan. Her name is Kreetcher.
I love rats, but I mostly just love Cindy. I want to get back to the life where it is me, Rex, and our two little ratty babies. These other rats have GOT to go. My life is an endless rotation of playtimes, cage changes, feedings, and treats. We have got to find homes for the other ones STAT. So...do you want a rat? We are kind of over running our rodent orphanage.
Oh, Rex's brother just called. Like, literally as I am writing this blog. He wants to know if we can watch his rat for him while his family is on vacation. Sure, why not? Bring on number eight. Lets see if we can hit double digits by the end of the summer.
Please, God. No.
